Diamond Dimage? |
Minoltas Dimage F100 occupies an easy middle-ground in being a user-friendly piece of digital equipment for those new to the world of digital photography, but with enough sophisticated gadgetry to send digitalveterans into a state of dewy-eyed elation.Select the Auto option and, as it suggests, the camera runs on auto-pilot: all you need do is press the button. The camera has all sorts of complex tracking systems, with even more complex names, but to simplify, if you manage to take an out-of-focus shot on this camera youve done well. You can add voice tags to photos, take sound recordings, and film short movies. Slip into manual mode and the shutter, aperture, ISO, and drive settings are at your mercy. All in all, the F100 is a tidy camera especially for those entering into the world of digital photography for the first time. Gain your footing on its auto setting, and when your ready move up to the more complex stuff without having to but a new camera.

Minolta F100 - excellent pocket sized camera |
Purchased to replace a broken sony s-70. Size was important as the sony was to large to fit in my pocket when out and about - so it was underused.Ive taken maybe 100 shots in the past 2 days and it does eat batteries - make sure you get some decent rechargables (although it takes standard size AA a couple of duracells will only last a few minutes). Using 4 rechargable 2000mAh cells (2 at a time) will give you a good days shooting - you can also use expensive non rechargable lithium batteries in an emergency. Picture quality and build quality are both good and it has an excellent continous shooting mode that at the right quality setting can fire off a hell of a lot of shots at 1.6 fps. I havent used the software at all (no device drivers required with xp)and I prefer to use photoshop elements for image adjustment purposes. It is also PIM compatible for printing on epson inkjets. One design fault concerns the usb connection which is a bit fragile - Im using a card reader so its not a problem - this also saves battery life. Overall for the cash its very good value and the design is worthy of more expensive models.

I returned this brilliant camera due to one fatal flaw |
This little camera is an absolute cracker, in terms size, features, ease of use, picture quality, and a fantastic 4 megapixels for the price. I did a lot of research before I bought it, and it really seemed a beautifully made and beautifully specd camera. However, I kept it for a week and returned it. The shutter delay is atrocious -- the worst I have ever seen. Doing very un-scientific trials at home, I determined it to be anywhere from two to four seconds from the moment of pressing the button until the camera took the picture. This is fine if you take landscapes or very posed pictures -- if so, this may be the camera for you. But I never do -- I take spur of the minute shots and I missed every single picture all week long. Kids, animals, and candid shots are completely out of the question. I even managed to do a self-portrait by pressing the button, running across the room, turning, sitting on the sofa and actually smiling before the shutter went. No self-timer delay required. I took it to a camera shop and we did time-trials against the other digitals in its class, and it was twice as slow as every single one of them. I really did like this camera (and the price!) and, in my heart, I really wanted to find a solution so I could keep it. But there is no point in having a super-specd camera that misses every photo you take, so back it went.
